The Indiana Rail Road Company

The Indiana Rail Road Company, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2011, is an Indianapolis-based regional railroad featuring a 500-mile rail network.

The Indiana Rail Road Company (INRD) is a heavy-haul regional railroad with operations over its own trackage in central, southern Indiana and east-central Illinois, directly serving communities such as Indianapolis, Bloomington, Sullivan and Terre Haute in Indiana, and Robinson, Ill. INRD also serves the major rail markets of Chicago and Louisville, Ky., via agreements with other railroads.

Since its founding in 1986 by company President and CEO Thomas G. Hoback, the Indiana Rail Road has grown exponentially thanks to a customer-first business philosophy. Annual carloads handled have grown almost 15 fold, and employment has increased from less than 20 to the nearly 200 Indiana and Illinois residents employed by INRD today.

INRD, like all railroads, offers an environmentally-friendly mode of transport: Each year, the company handles the equivalent of 800,000 truckloads of freight.

Route Structure:
Indiana Rail Road's Indianapolis Subdivision extends from its Senate Avenue Terminal (one-half mile south of Lucas Oil Stadium) to a connection with the Canadian National Railway at Newton, Ill., serving customers in communities such as Bloomington, Linton, Dugger and Sullivan, Ind., and Palestine and Robinson, Ill., along the way.

The Chicago Subdivision originates at the Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center near Burns City, Ind., running northwest through Linton and Jasonville to Terre Haute. Jasonville is the site of INRD's operational hub, Hiawatha Yard, a freight-switching yard and locomotive maintenance facility.
